Outdoor Gear Scene in Singapore
Whether you’re headed for a skiing jaunt or a mountaineering holiday, it’s not difficult these days to procure the right set of gear and accessories.
We’re all familiar with established outdoor gear brands like Marmot, Black Diamond, Outdoor Research, Mammut, and Patagonia – all of which can be procured locally at stores that specialize in adventure gear like Outdoor Life (Wheelock Place and Velocity), Adventure21 (Central) and Campers’ Corner (Waterloo Street). Some brands – like Arc’teryx, The North Face, and Columbia – even have their own stores.
From baselayers to fleece jackets and down shells, it’s not difficult to procure one in your size these days compared to a decade ago.
Plus, the prices are comparable to the US and Europe where the brands originate from – they may seem a bit steep, but one has to consider the million-dollar research into fabric tech and athlete endorsements.
While these brands have been quietly marketing their way into our packing list, the adventure market in Singapore seems to be big enough that other players are nudging in.
Beyond Elite Brands
Last year, French sporting brand Decathlon came into the market, setting the scene for more affordable outdoor gear. But they’re not the only ones going for budget-conscious buyers.
Earlier this year, popular fashion retailer Uniqlo debuted their affordable line of winterwear – from lightweight down jackets to fleeces and ultra-warm down – that wouldn’t look out of place at any outdoor gear retailer.
On the other end of the price spectrum is a newcomer to the winter gear market in Singapore.
French brand Moncler could be categorized as luxury goods, as their down jackets retail for around £1,000, but it’s clear from their marketing that they’re meant for the adventure market.
So it seems that no matter where your adventure takes you, there’s always a suitable price range for your gear.
